results of an ignored cat scan

My 57 year old brother suffered often from impactions and in the ER he had a CT scan and the narrative stated he had a severely impacted bowel- and nothing was done. He was sent up to his room w/ his sigmoid and bowel/colon full of clay like stool--(7 1/2 lbs of it after autopsy) and that night he threw up and became septic, went into cardiac arrest had seizures and died, as the feces entered his blood stream. What do you feel could have been done to prevent his death this way?

This is terrible, I am really sorry for your loss. That being said, it is hard for me, not being a doctor and not having the full context, to make a judgement. The usual approach is through oral laxatives and enemas, sometimes manual disimpaction. But again, why none of those tools were used - only the medical team can answer that...
